Always Have Useful Cordage Handy

Cord or cordage can be super useful in a bushcraft situation. A handy tip is to change your boot laces for paracord (which you'll get in a bushcraft or army surplus store). Cut the paracord twice as long as your boot laces need to be.

Then if you urgently need cordage use one of your laces as cordage, and cut the other lace in half to turn it into a conventional lace.

With such long laces there are a couple of ways to tie away all the surplus length. Photo 4 shows one way.

Moving Safely Over Steep/Exposed/Rocky Mountainside (From Mountain Skills 2 Syllabus)

Moving Safely Over Steep/Exposed/Rocky Mountainside:

Break the mountainside into small pieces. Look to move through each piece via 'ramps', 'gullies' and 'steps'. Each piece should finish in a 'safe haven' where you can assess the next piece.

No matter how comfortable you are in terrain within a 5 meter radius of you; zoom out and look at what is below you, for example a cliff; or above you, for example possible rockfall.

Here are six good questions to ask before tackling each piece of steep ground:
1. Could we do this?
2. Should we do this?
3. What is the likelihood of a slip?
4. What is the consequence of a slip?
5. If we scramble over this piece can we also scramble back, if necessary?
6. Can I see a way on and out; or are we doing something tricky/risky/time consuming - only to have to backtrack?

11 Simple Edible Foods To Forage In Ireland

Here are eleven simple wild foods to easily forage and eat. No preparation needed - just pick and eat. You will find these plants not quite year round, but pretty prevalent most of the year; and all over Ireland.

I have a mix here of meadowland plants such as sheep's sorrel, woodland plants such as old man's beard and mountain plants such as crowberry.

The seed of a yew berry can be fatally poisonous so exercise extreme caution. Also please give the plants priority over your food needs - pick carefully and sparingly - where you have permission. Leaving plenty for the plant to continue strong and plenty for the birds and animals. The environment and nature has to come first.

Leer voorklimmen in zes dagen - RC3

Van basisklimmer naar voorklimmer in 6 dagen

Learn to Lead Climb is een zesdaagse klimcursus in de Gap of Dunloe en op Dingle, Kerry.

Gedurende de zes dagen, die worden verdeeld over twee blokken, ga je klimmen en abseilen, waarbij je je richt op klimtechnieken en communicatie. Daarnaast leer je verschillende zekermethodes en een variatie aan klimuitrusting kennen. Ook leer je hoe je sets aanbrengt op de rotswand, hoe je een klim voorbereidt en hoe je moet voorklimmen.

Aan het einde van deze cursus weet je hoe je gebruik kunt maken van een handboek, hoe je moet voorklimmen terwijl je je sets plaatst, hoe je een klim voorbereidt en de uitrusting weer verwijdert. Je weet ook welke uitrusting nodig is om een zelfredzame voorklimmer te zijn.

Om goed te leren hoe je je uitrusting, zoals klimsets, hexes en klemapparaten, moet gebruiken, leg je een lange weg af die wel wat weg heeft van een stage. Deze periode werk je onder het toeziend oog van een meer ervaren klimpartner. Dit element van voorklimmen mag je niet overhaasten. Hoewel je aan het eind van onze intensieve cursus officieel voorklimmer bent, is het correct plaatsen van sets een leerschool die nog tot lang na de cursus voortduurt.

Deze cursus kan worden gebruikt als een eerste stap naar het behalen van een instructeursbevoegdheid.

Je hebt geen eerdere klimervaring nodig om deel te nemen aan deze cursus.
