Before covid struck - you may have been partway through training for Mountain Skills, Rock Climbing, Scrambling, Bushcraft or Kayaking.
Over the past year you potentially had very little practice; or possibly no practice at all. Maybe feeling your skills are back to zero, and you need to start your training courses all over again?
Working off the hope of things opening up a little in April/May (and obviously subject to guidelines at the time); I have scheduled some one-day refresher courses, to get you back in the saddle again, refresh any rusty skills, and hopefully after one-day's training be ready to progress and/or get back outdoors self-sufficiently and off the beaten track.
If you have, for example, completed a Mountain Skills 1 or Bushcraft Skills 1 and are feeling all those skills are forgotten; you will be surprised how much comes flooding back after just one day of refresher training. Plus a simple action plan. Plus some contacts you will make from the refresher course.
Price varies per course (see below), but will be hugely discounted. This is not just for Outdoors Ireland students - anyone can attend.
Dates are mid week and all courses are based in Glengarriff.

Emergency Plaster From Mountain Grass
How To Make An Emergency Plaster From A Common Mountain Grass:
Fionnán Or Purple Moor Grass
This stayed intact on the finger for five hours and survived rope coiling, driving and (careful!) hand washing.
1. Pluck the grass carefully from as low down as possible.
2. Wind carefully and tightly around wounded finger, extending well beyond the wound.
3. Trap or wrap the beginning of the grass under itself.
4. A series of simple round interwoven knots, or clove hitch knot will hold plaster in place.

Sundew
Sundew: amazing little carnivorous mountain and bogland plant, living partly from insects it captures and devours.
Protected plant so no picking! Can be used for asthma, coughs, lung infections and stomach ulcers.
Kills insects in about 15 mins and can live to 50 years.

Fire Tripod For Cooking, Fuel Drying & Gear Drying
Here is a fire tripod with cooking options, fuel drying and gear drying. No cordage used. This took two hours to build including finding the appropriate material, which was green hazel and green willow.
Begin with three forked uprights. The other forks in the uprights are necessary for this design, so finding the right material can take time. I find hazel and willow especially good for their abundant forks.
Self standing and self locking tripod using the natural forks.
Begin to place the mid height horizontal supports.
Cut a notch into one of the mid height horizontal supports.
Use natural forks for holding the horizontal supports in place.
All three horizontal supports in place.
A longer
stronger pole laid across the tripod to hang pots from. I call this the pot hanger.

Notch one end of pot hanger also. One end of pot hanger fitted into position to prevent slippage when pots are in use.
Two pots in use from pot hanger.
Another pot hanging from tripod for more gentle cooking.
This is an extra cooking device I call a pot pole.
Notch end of pot pole pretty deeply.
Carve two simple pegs.
Position pot pole like so over fire, either for gentle cooking at ember edge, or hard cooking at ember base. Stones can be used instead of pegs for securing pot pole.
Tripod in use with three different ways of hanging pots.
Gear drying over fire, especially effective once flames die and ember base increases.
Kindling and fuel drying. Placed into your shelter once dry as you never know when it will rain next!
A nice hazel poker.
Packed away ready for another day. While not practical to carry this if traveling on foot; on a canoe expedition I find it really useful to carry in the canoe stern and quickly assemble each evening at camp.
The overall sturdy design also allows it to be lifted on and off the fire as and when you require it.
