Extra Outdoor Training Courses, For When Restrictions Ease. This Includes Week-Long Beginner To Self Sufficient Courses, Plus Wicklow Courses

Based on the hope of things easing soon, and training courses back on the agenda, I have scheduled a range of extra courses. This includes Wicklow - giving easy access from Dublin.

I feel there is, or is about to be, an increase of people wanting to get outdoors, get off the tracks and trails, maybe become more adventurous, maybe become more self sufficient.

To that end you will see I have scheduled in some beginner friendly Beginner To Self Sufficient Courses to get hill walking, mountaineering, scrambling or bushcrafting. This also includes a one-day Kayak Skills Course; which is all that is needed initially if you have just got a kayak/canoe/sit on top, or are about to get one!

Always Have Useful Cordage Handy

Cord or cordage can be super useful in a bushcraft situation. A handy tip is to change your boot laces for paracord (which you'll get in a bushcraft or army surplus store). Cut the paracord twice as long as your boot laces need to be.

Then if you urgently need cordage use one of your laces as cordage, and cut the other lace in half to turn it into a conventional lace.

With such long laces there are a couple of ways to tie away all the surplus length. Photo 4 shows one way.

The Yew Tree

The Yew Tree - all parts toxic apart from the berry, which is delicious. The seed within the berry is highly toxic though and must be carefully removed.

The foliage is actually more toxic than the seeds, and increases in toxicity when dried.

Yew seeds or needles used to be dried and ground into powder which was used as a fatal poison in medieval days. Predating that Celtic warriors, and warrior tribes around the world, would sometimes carry yew poison to self-ingest if they were captured by an enemy and through torture there was a risk of betraying their tribe.

Yew poisoning symptoms include increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, collapse and cardiac arrest.

Even yew pollen can cause headaches, lethargy, aching joints, skin rashes; and is a trigger for asthma.

Having said that yew is an beautiful and majestic tree, often reaching 400 - 600 years of age, with huge druidic, historic and religious importance. I have a large yew growing beside our wood shed and am delighted to have it there.
