Expanding To Galway - Step 5

I have had little information to give out recently about progress towards having our Galway base operational. Things have been ticking over quietly in the background. I have also been caught up in a flurry of Kerry work, focusing on business planning, advertising planning, an exciting couple of days snow and ice climbing, plus some time off.

There has been constant behind the scenes planning (and amending plans) around having both a Kerry and Galway base. By this time next month I will be living in Galway, just outside Kinvara; although still spending a lot of time back in Killarney on the lakes and mountains.

We have recruited a fantastic instructor – Kilian Kelly – to run our Kerry operation, especially our guided kayak trips and kayak training courses. I was in college with Kilian years ago. In more recent years he assessed me on one of my kayak instructor assessments. He is one of the best instructors I have met or trained under, so I am really excited to have the opportunity to work alongside him. Kilian is going to bring a lot to the quality and value of what we offer, and he will be assisted by our current fantastic team of instructors.

We have also recruited an excellent freelance instructor and really nice guy – Henry – to assist in Galway; although it is a little hard to know at the moment exactly how busy or quiet our first summer season in Galway will be...

Like I mentioned a couple of months ago, we have run our first Galway Mountain Skills 1 and have a series of Mountain Skills 1 and Mountain Skills 2 Courses scheduled for Galway over the coming months. We are running some of our Learn To Lead Climb Courses in the Burren in Feb/Mar; followed by a Kayak Skills Course in May. Apart from these training courses, we will be focusing on three main products over the summer season; Guided Sea Kayak Tours Of Kinvara Bay, Galway Bay Sunset Kayak Tours and Galway City & Harbour Sea Kayak Tours.

By the end of Jan I need to have one, possibly two, storage trailers in the pipeline – this is currently our latest thought in terms of efficient storage of equipment. I need to have the office successfully moved into our Galway base and most importantly I need to have some great CDs for all of the driving I will be doing between Killarney and Kinvara!

A couple of other changes have happened recently. Ruth who ran the office with me (and in fact worked part-time with me since she was in transition year), will be doing less and less work as she recently qualified as a primary teacher and her teaching work is taking up more and more of her time. I will be sad to see Ruth leave, especially as she knows more about certain aspects of Outdoors Ireland than I do! Happily Aileen, who has a pretty amazing business background, will be stepping in to take on Ruth’s role, plus a whole lot more. With Aileen’s yoga business background also, we hope to run some Galway Yoga & Kayaking Workshops over the spring, with a morning’s Iyengar Yoga followed by a quick walk to Kinvara Bay for a relaxing afternoon’s sea kayak through the islands and inlets...

The other change is that Ferghal O Grady; again who has worked with me since the early days of Outdoors Ireland; has moved for the time being to Australia to follow another career. Ferghal always did an awesome job outdoors and put people quickly at ease, so we will miss him... Hopefully no more changes or losses for the time being!

Expanding To Galway - Step 4

Our first Galway Mountain Skills 1 Course ran last weekend, based from Kinvarra. The Burren landscape is an amazing place to walk and work, and our locations for each day of the Mountain Skills 1 were ideal, with minimal driving time to each start point. The hill training locations work better and have more features then I could have possible hoped for.

Mountain Skills 2 will also work well here from what I can see. I spent the day before the course calling into the farmers who own the hills and access points and they were all wonderfully welcoming and friendly. Our next MS1 in Galway is 25th & 26th Feb, with our next MS2 in Galway on 10th & 11th Nov.

I explored a superb lake near Kinvarra which is littered with islands, ruined churches and castle towers and has exciting potential for the future in terms of night kayak tours, cultural/historical kayaking and corporate challenge days or corporate team building.

As this property is privately owned, plus the fact it's a divergence from my initial Galway expansion plan, this product will be put on the back-burner for the time being, but it will be something I'll look at in about a year's time.

Our Galway City Kayak Tour which I explored thoroughly was a little below expectations, as access to the city canals and impressive working docks is impossible. The tidal and river effects are substantial and I have some more work to do to find a suitable and professional meeting/access point for launching our kayaks; however despite all this I believe I can still put together a really good city kayak tour, which will explore a little of the docks, possibly paddle part-way into Galway City (tide permitting), paddle out to an abandoned lighthouse on Mutton Island near Salthill and possibly take in one other island, which has a beautiful grassy shoreline and a ruined 19th century watch-tower...

Our Galway Bay Kayak Tour and Galway Sunset Kayak Tour will specifically be based from Kinvarra Bay and this trip, when I explored it, was far above my expectations. I'm confident I can run a superb guided kayak tour of Kinvarra Bay, with it's white rocky shoreline, dotted with cattle and horses, it's many, many islands, an ancient and intact castle, the busy boating village of Kinvarra and the abundant wildlife - especially curious seals!

The next step is to complete a risk assessment of our operating areas, partially to gain county council permissions. This Friday we are interviewing four candidates for the Kerry instructor position. I also need to meet the Galway Harbour Master who I'm finding it hard to get hold of, plus find a suitable launching spot for our city kayaking - which our participants will be able to find easily...

Expanding To Galway - Step 3

I spent the last few days in Galway, partially as a weekend off and partially as a chance to get some Galway expansion work done.

A morning meeting with Failte Ireland was fairly productive and highlighted several more areas of work to be done between now and our Easter launch date, mainly in terms of working with county councils and the harbour authority.

What's reassuring for us as a business expanding into a new area, is the fact that adventure tourism in Galway and Clare doesn't seem main-stream/established/majorly recognised; or certainly to my initial research. While boat trips and coach tours are big business and there's a lot we can learn from how they run their operations, especially in relation to their city centre booking booths, adventure tourism is a new and niche area that we can hopefully play a part in developing.

As work has progressed over the past couple of months it's become clear that there is a need for at least one more Outdoors Ireland instructor in Kerry, especially over this coming spring and summer; so I'm currently recruiting for a new team member...

Applications are beginning to come in and over the next two/three weeks we'll set up interviews and get another instructor on-board. There will be a long and intensive in-house training process to get the person au-fait with all of our practices and methods of running training courses and guided trips.

I need to get back up to Galway as soon as possibly, probably mid December now, to finish checking out kayak locations, meet landowners and just get things ready to have a proper product in place.

The main challenge I'm still grappling with is whether we really need a second work vehicle or not. While in terms of spending/cash flow it would be great to avoid buying a second vehicle, it's looking like it's going to be necessary, even simply in terms of looking professional in both of our locations.

The Rogaine Event held in the Wicklow Mountains and organized by Setanta Orienteers, caught my eye about 3 years ago when I got into orienteering in Cork. But it looked pretty serious stuff on the navigation side of things and I thought maybe sometime I could rope a friend or two into teaming up for it.

After doing a lot more on the navigation skills in the past year with Nathan’s excellent instructors (completed MS2 in February), I thought maybe I’d look at the 6hr event. Of my two friends who would have been up for it, one was going to be on honeymoon and the other had a family holiday booked, but this year they opened up the 6hr event to individuals as well. So on a day when I’m not sure I was thinking straight, I signed up.

To take from the organizers website (www.setantaorienteers.org/rogaine), “Rogaining is a sport of long distance navigation on foot for teams of two or more over a twenty four hour period. The object of the sport is to score points by finding checkpoints located within a specially mapped area within the allowed time period. As checkpoints can be visited in any order, strategy and teamwork are important features of the sport as well as endurance, stamina and navigational skills, with night navigation a key element. The team members must stay together at all times.”

From my own observation, the event caters for the casual hillwalker to the hard core orienteers (some of those on the 24hr would sleep out overnight in bivvy bags, or continue straight through the night, instead of coming back to base for a few hours sleep).

Feeling pretty nervous arriving for registration, our mandatory kit was checked and there was a chance to talk to a few fellow competitors. At 12noon, we received an envelope with a list of control points (CPs) and their grid references, and the clock started ticking… The first 20mins (depending how fast you were!) was spent transferring the CPs to the map, noting their scoring, and planning the route. I quickly struck off CPs that were way off at a distance, as I knew I wouldn’t be the fastest mover, so Plan A was to follow the blue route I’ve marked on the map as this could be followed in a relatively good sequence, however, noting the two rivers to be crossed.

More about Plan A in a bit. My other option was the red route taking in CP15 as the first control. Plan A went very quickly down the drain when I made a very basic error of misjudging our starting point and thinking a road above where we were was the one I wanted, it wasn’t…

Onto Plan B. However, this is where local knowledge came into play. I thought I could possibly take one of the forest rides through to hit about 500m below CP15, but the landscape had changed significantly since the map was published and local knowledge knew to turn left and take a more straightforward route, which in hindsight should have been my only route choice.

Realising there was no easy way through the forest, I discounted it and headed straight for an easy pickup of CP17…tick tock… nearly 50mins down already. From there I headed up a very sparse forest ride for CP6, again a rookie mistake with a 1:30000 map, I had the control marked at the wrong junction but quickly corrected it and with a few of us a little confused as to where it was due to disappeared trees, it was found. From there, I took a forest ride NE to hit the hills for CP7, a 400pointer.

This is where the REAL fun started - with the rain that had been pouring the past few days, the forest was just bog and I was really happy with my new (now filthy) Salomon trail runners and choice of very light running socks. Neither held the water or got sucked off me in the boggy ground. I’d lost any hope of keeping the feet dry for the 6 hours. Eventually reaching the forest edge, found a river crossing point, and onto the heather following a bearing to circle the hill and hit the path that ran from Pt718 to Pt 611.

With a long tiring climb through heather and peat bogs, I was cursing myself for my silly mistake at the start as I’d really have loved to follow my other route. Anyway…reaching the path, took a bearing, and getting excited thinking I’d be hitting CP7 soon…mmmmm. A boulder…so, I reached the contour where this elusive boulder should be, no kite to be seen (I did see a deer!), saw a boulder in the distance way below the pacing, and thought “no way, can’t be that one, maybe I should check..no! don’t, you know it’s not it! otherwise I’ll be checking every boulder I see!” I must have wasted 30mins trying to figure out what had happened, and where I was.

Finally I decided I’d head up to the steep contour where the boulder should be and circle around to head for the next CP (had done my usual veering left off course). Rounded a corner, and what’s this? A big BIG boulder… and yes it was the one I’d wasted so much time looking for. I just had to take some more time to take a photo! Heading away from there, I felt quite happy as I knew the next one would be OK, headed straight up to the path, took a bearing to hit the river gully above CP10 and tracked down (remembered a discussion from MS2 about ‘bearing off’). Down to the road, have a Mars bar while considering my next option. I considered a trek along the road and take a track to CP9 for the last one, but with 1hr30 left, 4k round trip to get it, with 4k from current position back to base, and points docked for each min late, I decided my weary legs had had enough. By the time I’d get back it would be around 13k covered, 1250 points collected, but compare that to one of the mixed teams who collected 3000+points, I’ve a lot of work to get near that standard!

Getting back to base to a cup of coffee and sit down with the midges, I reflected on the afternoon, the mistakes I’d made, what I’d do different next time, thought of how quickly 6hrs passes and how much I’d really enjoyed it. Will I be signing up again next year? Absolutely. Will I do the 24hr? I seriously doubt it, I think I’ll stick with the 6hr for the moment! Well done to Setanta Orienteers for a great event and thanks to Nathan & the two Daves whose voices popped into my head during the day.

After sitting strong easterly winds over the last five days. Covered a small amount of coast today in a hefty force six wind behind which made it difficult to keep the kayak pointing in the right direction... Have made it to Benwee Head. A nice elderly gentleman sorted me out with five litres of well water to drink and cook with. He told me it will be the best water I'll ever taste. Time to set up camp and get dinner on. Then to bed before 8pm!

7th May
Challenging force six gusting force seven. Got twelve more miles covered today. Made it to Belberg Harbour, one step closer to Sligo. Cooking a feed of spuds or trying to! Strong winds tonight will put the tent Vaude gave me through it's paces.

9th May
Gale force winds yesterday and today so have not gone to sea. Spent the afternoon giving my thanks to the coastline by making a positive impact of picking up litter washed ashore. Not a pretty job but someone needs to do it! Let's make a conscious effort next time we're outdoors to collect some litter.

I'm on my long-awaited holidays until Thursday 12th May!

I'm leaving Oysterbed Pier near Sneem and sailing along Ireland's South-West Coast, in my sailing boat, Sabaro. We're bound for West Cork and Baltimore, with stops planned in little ports along the way like Castletown Bere and Crookhaven. There's a Fiddle Festival in Baltimore and a berth waiting for us there!

My Outdoors Ireland Team is a little scattered this week, with Barry on his solo sea kayak journey around Ireland, Tadhg in the middle of running an intensive rock-climbing course, Dave also sailing to Baltimore in his yacht, Ferghal en-route from New Zealand and Ruth tackling some big exams.

Apologies in advance if our phone doesn't get answered immediately or your email doesn't get replied to the same day. In Ruth's absence I'll mainly be running the office from sandy beaches and sheltered rocky coves, thanks to my laptop and dongle, so just allow 24 hours for me to reply to you. When the wind was behind me leaving Achill, heading for Belmullet, there was plenty of opportunity to make good use of the tidal race surf! All in all an exhilarating and exhausting day.

After a rough night's sleep listening to the wind tapping on the windows of the house on Clare Island. Difficult sleeping when you can tell the sea may be rough the next day.

Got up this morning to a sea covered in white horses and a good force 5 blowing. Got a break in the weather during the afternoon and made like the clappers to Achill Sound for shelter.

Some rough seas on the way with whirlpools swinging my boat in different directions. A good challenge. Got some provisions in town and a nice bowl of seafood chowder and pint of Guinness.

Then onto Bull's Head, aiming towards Belmullet...

Got going on Tuesday Evening and managed to round Slyne Head with big swell thundering on the near reefs. Camped that night under Slyne Head.

Wednesday Morning headed off to Friar Island.
Had lunch in shelter from brisk winds.
Paddled onto Inis Bofin making good time with a nice steady southerly wind at my back, surfing my way there.
Calm and peaceful camp there that night.

Woke up Thursday Morning not able to see more than twenty metres in thick sea fog. Navigation, sea charts and compass all put to use!

Stopped off on Inis Turk for lunch, then onto Clare Island for a nice welcome from good friends, Niall and Luna. A few pints of Guinness later, some good food and a 'leaba' to put my head down.

Heading for Achill and then Belmullet today...

Spring & Summer 2011 Are Barreling Towards Us Here In Killarney...

Outdoors Ireland, My Instructor Team & I are well and truly into our sixth year of operation at this stage. It's been a fantastic six years with a steep learning curve and some unforgettable experiences on our mountains, sandstone cliffs and pristine glaciated lakes.

We were gifted with incredible winter mountaineering conditions in Kerry's MacGillycuddy Reeks, Ireland's Highest Mountains, throughout December 2010...

Dave Roche and I spent most days between December 1st to 23rd either working or playing on Carrauntoohil, in places such as Curve, Central and O'Shea's Gullies; or further off in the MacGillycuddy Reeks, doing roped ascents of Cummeenagearagh Gully or traverses of Beenkeragh Ridge. During this period you could have easily have been mistaken for thinking you were Scottish Winter Mountaineering or Alpine Climbing!

After Christmas we continued our Mountain Skills 1 and Mountain Skills 2 Training Courses, run in both Kerry and Wicklow. Dave and Tadhg Boyden took on running most of these map reading & navigation courses, while I spent my days office-bound.

Our Kerry MS Courses are now run from Reeks Lodge, our new operations base, which is working extremely well - in fact on the first day we use the hills immediately around Reeks Lodge meaning there's no driving and maximum time spent on the hills.

Howling Ridge has been generating interest, with Dave and I running Howling Ridge Weekends, covering scrambling skills & rope work on Day One, followed by a roped ascent of Howling Ridge on Day Two.

Over the past months, taking advantage of the quieter time of year, I've been working on a new website - which is now live - and coming up with different ideas to generate more bookings. We've also compiled a range of, much more in-depth, local information about the areas from where we run our Kayak Tours, Rock Climbing Trips and Carrantuohill Climbs; allowing us to properly share with people much more of the area's legends, stories and history!

The past month has seen me hiking across Ireland with Lucy The Goat and Cara The Dog, in search of the Irish Welcome.

This week seems to herald the approaching summer season in Kerry, with enquiries coming in for our Kayak Tours on the Lakes of Killarney and our Killarney Sunset Kayak Trips.

Our new fleet of Dagger Blackwater Kayaks have their first trip on the water this Friday, with a morning trip across Lough Lein, exploring limestone caves and landing on Innisfallen Island & Abbey. Later in the week they have their first Laune River Kayak Trip of 2011, with Catherine Mac from the Irish Times!

Within the next two weeks my instructor team will be meeting for a day to plan for the summer; look at how we can continue improving and offering more value to our customers; and importantly have a couple of pints and chill out with each other, which is something we don't get to do often enough.

Looking ahead for the next few months we will be focusing on adventure activities such as our Day-Time & Sunset Kayaking, Rock Climbing in the Gap of Dunloe, Guided Climbs of Carrauntoohil, Two-Day Learn to Rock Climb Courses and Summer Solstice Night Climb of Carrauntoohil...

There's a great atmosphere in Killarney, Dingle and West Cork at the moment, with a lot of people I speak to looking forward to a vibrant, busy summer and great weather, although I'm sure we'll have a couple of wet and windy weeks thrown into the mix; it wouldn't be Ireland otherwise!

Due to recent high winds there has been a major collapse in the Upper Quarry. The routes from Giant's Staircase rightwards all the way to Praying Mantis have been affected.

Mountaineering Ireland and DLRCC Parks Authority requests all climbers to avoid the upper section of the quarry until clearance work and stabilisation has been completed.

In a bizarre and grotesque twist a severed hand was discovered behind a fallen block in the proximity of Frenzy.

Gardai have been called to the scene and are currently investigating. They have stated that it is unlikely to be a climbers hand but have not ruled out the possibility.

If you've always wanted to get off the beaten track and explore the mountains properly, but lack the right skills; or if a map has always seemed like a random collection of squiggles, then our Mountain Safety Promotion is for you!

The one-day workshops will take place outdoors, in the Wicklow Mountains near Glendalough. All abilities will be catered for, from complete beginners to experienced walkers, together with experienced and qualified mountaineering instructors.

You will be given a crash course in map reading, compass bearings, navigation techniques and equipment advice.

Hiking boots can be provided, so all you'll need are waterproofs, map, compass and a sense of humor!

Day 12: Enniskerry - Stephen's Green

We'd a 5am start, passing this old tower as dawn was breaking.

I had no idea how long it was going to take us to travel across the Dublin Mountain Way to the Luas stop at Laughanstown and how long we'd spend wandering busy streets looking for the stop. We've just arrived at the stop, met four of the ticket inspectors, who bought us coffee and now have a bit of a wait until our ride arrives.

Day 11: Laragh - Enniskerry

This was our first glimpse of the Irish Sea and it was here really that it sunk in; the fact we had hiked across Ireland, from the Atlantic Ocean on the south west coast to the Irish Sea on the east coast...

This was a group of walkers we met coming over the Wicklow Mountains. It turned out they were actually previous customers.

These guys we met stocked us up with flapjacks and bananas!

We stayed this evening at Brook Cottage B&B in Enniskerry, near Powerscourt, where Cara was given the huge treat of being allowed to sleep inside!

Day 10: Tinahealy - Laragh

Another early start today following the Wicklow Way in absolutely torrential, lashing rain; crossing multiple fences and thundering streams. I listened to my little radio for a time, but ended up putting it away, afraid the rain would ruin it.

We met this really nice woman in the morning, who saw my flask strapped to my bag and insisted on re-filling it with tea for me, and giving the guys ginger nut biscuits. She also thrust a huge bar of dark chocolate into my hand as we said our goodbyes.

We came across this river later in the day with the bridge barricaded off and no way over for us, apart from wading, which we were forced to do. Wet boots and socks for the rest of the day!

Chris from Tudor Lodge B&B collected us in his Mercedes sparing us the final couple of hours of hiking and that night we certainly all slept well.

Day 9: Shillelagh - Tinahealy

Liam at the Old Shillelagh B&B is an interesting guy, being probably the only person in Ireland making the ancient Shillelagh or 'Fighting Stick' the proper way, taking three years for the process to reach completion. We had an short day's walk today, so Liam spent the morning showing me the many different types of Shillelagh he makes and the processes they go through; from cudgels to clubs and from fighting sticks to luck charms...

I got myself a big blackthorn fighting one!

Later that morning a van pulled up beside us and John invited us into his nearby house, for ham sandwiches and tea, laced with sugar. Today was an easy day; a short walk later we arrived at our B&B and I popped into the village for a huge plate of bacon and cabbage.

Day 8: Gorsebridge - Shillelagh

Today we started from a spot high above Goresbridge, called 'Nine Rocks'. From here we had a fabulous down-hill descent for what seemed like hours, into a bracing stiff breeze.

Wind turbines thrummed nearby, peaking over the pine tops.

This is one of the scenic villages we passed through over the day, the church standing prominent over the clustered white buildings.

At one point during the day we seemed to disappear off the map, between two different map numbers, and wandered randomly east until stumbling across the tiny and quaint village of Clonegal, just across the Wicklow border.

Here we got chatting to several locals, including Brian from the hardware (and everything else) store and re-stocked on supplies, including water and peppermint cream. Brian thrust a bag of fresh lettuce into my hand for Lucy and as we retreated past the post office the post-master appeared with a piece of ham for Cara.

A long, long walk later, with some failed attempts at hitching, we finally arrived in Shillalagh, courtesy of Liam our B&B owner that night, who saved us the final couple of miles in his small Audi that somehow we all squeezed into with very little trace or mess!

Day 7: Graiguenamanagh - Gorsebridge

Today was a quiet and relaxing day, following old tow paths along the River Barrow all day; meeting no-one apart from a few runners and dog-walkers.

We stopped for a pint upon arriving in Goresbridge, at the only pub open there that afternoon. Alice, the bar-tender, was engrossed in a game of cards with all the other bar occupants and served me in between her dealing and betting. Cara was allowed in beside the fire so I wasn't complaining though!

That night we stayed in The Almo B&B where Catherine made us more than welcome, cooking dinner, doing laundry and giving the guys a stable and hay.

Day 6: Inistioge - Graiguenamanagh

I awoke to thick mist and church bells.
By the time we were ready to depart, the mist had burnt off and warm sunshine was pouring over Kilkenny.

Just as I was walking out of the Inistioge, Johnny and Jimmy waved me down and invited us back inside for a cup of tea. After tea, gold grain biscuits and morning papers we made a second departure.

Leaving town an elderly woman stopped and asked what we were doing. When I told her we were walking to Dublin she wanted to know if I was taking Lucy up there to sell her!

Part-way through the morning we had several encounters and chats with the local postman, Richard. By the time we descended into Graiguenamanagh that evening, the postman had our B&B alerted to our approx time of arrival and the postman's brother Tony, who runs a little pub called The Cozy Inn, on the look-out for us.

Day 5: Mullinavat - Inistioge

Best Day So Far!

Today wasn't shaping up to be the best of days...
We got a lift from Mullinavat part-way along the busier roads that we would have been walking, but still had a long road section to complete that day.

I had tried for B&B in Inistioge but everwhere was closed, so we were facing into a major detour off our trail for a night's sleep, followed by a major detour back onto the trail the next day.

After a sunny descent through mature woods towards the Barrow River, which glinted through the trees at us, we came into the little village of Inistioge. Spotting O Donnell's Pub with the front door ajar, I made a quick decision to tie the guys to a tree in the village green and have a pint, before continuing...

Johnny, one of the two brothers who owns the pub, didn't initially believe me as I asked for a pint bottle of Bulmers, and a bucket of water for the goat, however after some convincing I received both!

The day suddenly took a turn for the better as Cara burst in through the front door and swrawled across the floor. Someone called Michael bought me a drink, so I bought him one back, then he bought me another. Suddenly I'd had four pints, all before 2pm in the afternoon, which I don't think I've ever done before - lovely feeling!

The pub was a busy place on a Monday afternoon, with a steady trickle of locals, mainly farmers, dropping in for a drink, on their way to and from their jobs, including Martin who dropped in on his way back from the vet, with a phuenomonic bull calf lying in his car...

Every pint of Guiness that Johnny, or Jimmy his brother, served had the persons name written in the white head...

A little unsure as to my plans, but moving Lucy to the riverside park while I decided my next movements, I was approached by Richard, who offered to open his B&B - Woodstock Arms - for me that evening, despite the fact they were closed for the season.

Delighted with the turn of events, which relieved us of all pressure, I returned into O Donnell's to celebrate with Sean and Seamus, with whom I'd made good friends at this stage.

Later that day, as afternoon slipped into evening, we drifted (along with dog and goat) from O Donnell's into the bar of Woodstock Arms. Here Annette, Richard's wife, made me a mountain of toasted sandwiches and Sean and I had ourselves whipped at pool.

Day 4: Carrick On Suir - Mullinavat

Strange Town, Carrick On Suir - teenage girls stood on dark street corners, or sat in doorways; men stumbled down the streets from pub to pub; souped-up cars paraded non-stop down the main street. We were glad to leave, making a 7am getaway to escape the traffic on the first 1km of road walking.

We reached the tiny village of Piltown just before 10am and sat patiently outside waiting for Anthony's Inn to open and begin serving breakfast. Tom The Landlord and Robin The Chef made us feel at home, with Cara allowed to curl up underneath my table and Lucy put into the back garden with a bucket of water.

After a great breakfast we hit the road refreshed and began using the map in earnest, detouring off some of the road sections of the Leinster Way and picking our own way through fields, back-roads and woodland. At one stage we entered into a sanctuary for something, with high fences, corrugated shelters and wire traps around us. Nervously we kept going expecting to come across wild boar or dinosaurs, but saw neither!

Towards day end we got chatting to Fiona, Jimmy and Paddy, pictured above, who allowed us to re-water. Not long afterwards we descended into Mullinavat and our night's lodgings at Glenraha Farmhouse B&B.

Day 3: Clonmel - Carrick On Suir

Day 2: Newcastle - Clonmel

What a breakfast! I was eating for an hour this morning; freshly squeezed orange juice, just baked scones, almond bread, apple porridge - with extra stewed apple on the side, fully cooked Irish with spicy sausages and a huge pot of coffee; before being waved off by Olive; who rang me later that day to see how we were doing.

Hands down the breakfast I received at Glasha Farmhouse is the best I've ever experienced and I'll be back there again sometime soon!

Deserted country roads, hedged by frosty fields and swirling mist greeted us today. Shortly after starting we emerged at a church standing on a crossroads. Mass was being said, with eight cars parked outside. Speakers on the outside walls were broadcasting the priest's sermon through the mist and we paused for a moment...

We climbed steadily out through the mist and happily detoured onto forest trails. Here I gave Lucy ownership of her journey, by releasing her from the rope. She's developed a big connection with Cara and follows Cara's every bound, sometimes to her detriment!

At one stage we had a minor rescue mission to release Lucy from a field that she followed Cara into; then couldn't climb back out of!

Still following the Munster Way, we detoured off it later in the day, crossing Glenary River at a suitable ford, cutting out a 3km switch-back. Then following a washed-away track that you could be forgiven for thinking was actually a stream, we emerged into a farmyard and got chatting to Larry, a retired FCA officer and now farming.

After dallying for half an hour with Larry, getting a pub recommendation and exchanging some chocolate for some goat oats, we continued into the bright afternoon sunshine.

Stopping for tea and Olive's almond bread on top of Glennagad Hill, beneath the cross, was a welcome respite. Clonmel lay stretched below us, with smoke rising from the chimneys of Bulmers Brewery.

We invoked some laughter and incredulous looks as we navigated Clonmel's busy streets searching for McCarthy's B&B.

Robin and Debbie run a fabulous, rambling townhouse B&B, with huge bedrooms at the end of long passage-ways.

Once the animals were tended to and Debbie had removed her laundry from the back-garden clothes line, I was off for steak and a couple of pints in Phil Carroll's; a superb old-style pub with plenty of bar counter to lean on and dark corners for hatching plans.

Day 1: Clogheen - Newcastle

Dazzling sunshine, the sharp scent of pine, rutted tracks and thinly frozen puddles marked the beginning of Day One.

Lucy the Goat, Cara the Dog and I hiked from a mountain pass called ‘The Vee’ near Clogheen, along a way-marked trail - the Munster Way - to Newcastle.

Following the northern flanks of the Knockmealdown Mountains, our hiking consisted of deserted forest trails, full of bird song and an occasional very startled deer. The only person we met while actually hiking today was an elderly man, who upon seeing us approaching, dashed back to his car to snatch his walking stick, which he then kept quite close until we passed!

The day started out, hopefully as it will continue, with a chance random encounter from a local man... As I was pulling on my boots, Eddie drove past slowly at about three miles an hour, before reversing back up the road to us. Once he'd established they were my animals tied to a roadside gorse bush and that I didn't know any O'Sullivan's from Kenmare, he told me I couldn't leave my jeep where it was, as I'd return to find the four wheels lifted from it thanks to tinkers, so I took up his offer of parking it beside the sheep-dip pen on his farm.

Stiles and fences don't seem a problem to Lucy thankfully.
No amount of dragging or coaxing will persuade her to cross, but I've discovered once Cara and I cross a stile and leave her behind she'll scamper over to join us lively enough. I'm finding that goats, like one or two people I know, can be quite stubborn!

We're going to have to make more progress from now onwards, otherwise I'm going to have to hire a manager for Outdoors Ireland, I'll be away from Killarney for so long! Two weeks I can see easily turning into three or four weeks!

Upon arriving at Olive's Glasha Farmhouse B&B we were treated to straw, silage, water, an incredible four course meal and a bottle of red wine accordingly!

I did a training hike with Lucy the goat, Cara the dog and a couple of friends yesterday, from Reeks Lodge across to Cronin's Yard for hot chocolate and porter cake! It's a fabulous, easy going hike, that takes about 45 mins each way; must do it more often... Lucy did well, although she was a little out of breath!

We're all off the the All Care Vet Clinic in Killarney today for check-ups and then we start on Wed.

Intern / Apprentice Wanted!

My Outdoors Ireland Team & I are planning to run an apprentice type program towards the end of this spring.

We are looking for someone to join Outdoors Ireland in Kerry as an intern/apprentice.

This person will be integrated fully into my adventure training company, working outdoors with Dave, Tadhg and Barry; working in the office with Ruth; and developing business/marketing concepts with myself, Nathan.

Our intern/apprentice will receive a wide range of specifically tailored training, nationally recognised adventure training courses and behind-the-scenes business training.

Our new Outdoors Ireland team member will be chosen from a group of interested participants, who will undertake a series of tasks and challenges; from assisting with leading groups outdoors, to developing a mock marketing plan for specific products we provide, to team work and communication skills.

The work contract will be fixed for a set period, such as six months, with the potential for full-time work...

Our intern/apprentice would need to have an interest in outdoor adventure, business, marketing and admin; although no previous experience is necessarily needed. They would need to be a hard worker and have a passion to excel!

Right now; I am looking for feedback and ideas from you in relation to how we should run our program, what we should offer our new apprentice and what challenges we should run to select this person...

Hiking Across Ireland With A Goat And Dog
This March - Kerry adventurer Nathan Kingerlee is continuing his journey, hiking across Ireland with a goat and dog. Kingerlee’s journey, in search of the famous Irish welcome, began last January when, together with his companions, he hiked the 168km Blackwater Way from Kerry to Tipperary.

Now Kingerlee, along with Lucy the Goat and Cara the Dog, are facing into a 304km trek across country from Tipperary to Dublin. Their journey will follow way-marked trails, including the Mid Leinster Way and Wicklow Way and is expected to take just over two weeks.

Kingerlee, who runs an outdoor adventure company in Killarney – Outdoors Ireland – explains that he was originally inspired to start walking after reading books like ‘Around Ireland With A Fridge’ and ‘McCarthy’s Bar’. The final push came after reading an online report – which stated that the Irish welcome, renown throughout the world, was slightly disappearing in places.

‘We hope to do 20-25km per day carrying all we need with us’ states Kingerlee. ‘At night we’ll find B&Bs to stay in. I’m not going to organise too much in advance of the trip as I’d like to put myself in the shoes of a visitor and rediscover the Ireland that we sell to tourists. The days will be long and quite slow as Lucy the goat isn’t a particularly fast walker and I’ll also be carrying a two-week supply of rolled barley and dog biscuits!’

Devil's Ladder Gone To Hell

I've never seen the Devil's Ladder as dangerous and unstable as it is at the moment. There's a week-old mini landslide/rockslide 5m down from the top and about 30/40m down from the top of The Ladder is a huge boulder (the size of a small home heating oil tank) which has slipped several inches in the past weeks and is ready to slip a lot more.

I remember a year or two ago there was a time when it was very unstable, but this is the most dangerous I've seen it yet.

Saturday was the wildest day we've had a guided group on Carrauntoohil in the past 12 months or so. After a blustery hike in the Hag's Glen we had fabulous shelter from the gale-force winds as we ascended The Levels and O Shea's Gully, although we could hear the wind howling overhead. The summit ridge to Carrauntoohil had us on our hands and knees at stages, followed by a battle against the elements down towards Christ's Saddle. It certainly blew away any cobwebs and freshened us up!

Mountain Skills 2 - This Week

We've a Mountain Skills 2 running in Beaufort, Killarney, this Wed 2nd & Thurs 3rd Feb - with some places available on it.

Mountain Skills 2 is a two-day hill walking, map reading and steep ground course in the Kerry mountains.

Over the two days you will cover emergency procedures, grid references, advanced navigation techniques, compass bearings, steep ground work and route cards.

At the end of this course you will be well underway to being self-sufficient in the Irish mountains, in most weather and visibility conditions. You will also have a good understanding of the preparation needed to move onto Mountain Skills Assessment, which is a further two-day assessment.

Pacing (For Mountain Skills)

Pacing is a technique used for Mountain Skills/Mountain Navigation, generally over distances of less than 500 metres. It's used mainly in bad visibility or for night navigation.

Pacing is knowing the exact distance between point A and point B; then knowing how many footsteps or paces you need to take to cover the distance.

You need a 1:50 000 OSI Map and Silva Type 4 Compass.

Stage 1
1. Using the millimetre ruler of your compass, measure the distance between point A and point B.

2. 1 millimetre = 50 metres
If you measure 6 millimetres, between point A and point B, then the distance is 300 metres, and so on...

Stage 2
1. It's hugely important you begin your pacing from the exact position of point A.

2. When you count your paces, you count every double-step - so every time your right foot hits the ground, that's one pace.

3. Pace for 100 metres, counting your paces in your head, until you reach the 100 metre mark.

4. You only pace in multiples of 100 metres, so once you reach your first 100 metres - stop; count off a multiple of 100 metres on your fingers; begin your second multiple of 100 metres; then your third multiple of 100 metres.

5. Once you've paced three multiples of 100 metres, you should be at point B, which is where you were aiming for.

Stage 3
1. Even in zero visibility, if you know that your pacing has taken you, for example, 300 metres to your point B, which could be a spot height; then you can be reasonably confident your spot height is close by.

2. If your point is not obvious, look around a little (without becoming misplaced), continue on for 50 metres, and also back-track for 50 metres.

Stage 4
What we've skipped so far is how do you work out how many double-paces you need to take to walk 100 metres across the mountains?

This is a different number of double-paces for each person, as each walker has a different leg length and walking style.

1. On typical Irish hillside (not too steep), you need to mark out a 100 metre section. For this use a builders tape ruler, a climbing rope of a certain known length or an experienced Outdoors Ireland instructor!

2. Walk this distance, at your average hill walking speed and taking average-sized hill walking steps. As you walk this measured distance, count how many double-paces you take to arrive at 100 metres.

3. Try this four or five times. Your number will probably be something between 54 and 72 double-paces.

Pacing is only useful when used in conjunction with other Mountain Skills techniques, such as Compass Bearings, Timing and Cut-Off Points.

Team Building In 2011: Killarney, Ireland

Clear communication and objectives, combined with an overall shared vision, are now more important than ever, as teams work in 2011.

An ability to address issues simply and strive to improve are vital, be it for a large company, an SME business, or a sports club.

The overall ethos of your team building program will look at how to take your learning and communication points raised, and use them in real life, as well as addressing inter-team and intra-team issues.

Sample Two Day Program
Monday Evening
Arrive at the luxurious and comfortable, four star, Lake Hotel; set on the shores of the Killarney Lakes and surrounded by Killarney National Park. Relax in the Lakeside Bar & Bistro that evening.

Tuesday
After an early breakfast you will meet your Outdoors Ireland facilitators in one of the hotel's bright, spacious, meeting rooms for a clear brief on your program and objectives.

From here you will work outside in the wooded hotel grounds, within changing sub-teams and also as one overall team, to complete projects and challenges which have been designed around your objectives, to raise learning points, bring issues to the surface and empower you to perform to your maximum.

Regular open discussions and debriefs will happen in an informal way, with your team very much bringing up your own learning points and issues. Some time will also be spent indoors with more in-depth debriefs and discussions.

Projects will be designed for all abilities and will result in having to examine your actions with questions such as:
What Do We Want To Achieve?
How Can We Achieve?
What Are We Doing Well?
What Needs Improving?
How Can We Communicate Better?

Most importantly, our facilitators will discuss with you how to take your debrief points and learning points from each individual project and apply them to normal, sometimes hectic or pressurised, working life and corporate projects.

Projects will increase in complexity over your day and may finish on the first day with a night-time task, before unwinding with a well deserved and delicious evening meal in the Lake Hotel's Castlelough Restaurant.

Wednesday
The second day of your program may begin with a refreshing strategy project through Killarney National Park.

After a healthy lunch you will be tasked with shorter projects where your team will apply your learnings to agree an overall objective for the day, then divide into sub-teams and work to achieve your objective.

Tuesday will finish over tea/coffee with sub-teams presenting their learning points to the overall group, explaining how they will apply their learnings back into the workplace and developing a simple action plan they commit to continuing with.
